World’s popular companies like IBM, Apple, Google, and Samsung are known for their innovative products & services. Do you know – what is the key to their success? Well, the answer is they use design thinking process to drive innovation and creativity!
According to IDEO, the global design company, ‘Everyone is creative—and that creativity can be learned and practiced; it unleashes an individual’s potential to become a dynamic problem solver.
With the aim to enhance creativity, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommends that kids should be encouraged to practise ‘design thinking’ in which they can make their own design decisions and come up with solutions to real world problems like water scarcity, poverty, climate change, depletion of marine life – to name a few.
Design Thinking is a human-centric process for creative problem-solving. It consists of five stages.
Here’s how kids work on a design thinking project where they are asked to design a product that solves a given problem:
Kids research and gather data to gain a deeper personal understanding of the problem and the needs of the users for whom they are designing the product.
Based on their research and understanding, they identify and define the needs of the users and the core problems that need to be solved.
Without judging or evaluating their ideas, they generate lots of ideas to address the problem.
Keeping in mind the needs of the users, they design and create a model that will solve their problems.
They present their solution/model to the users, receive feedback and rework to refine their solution.
Design Thinking inspires your child to think out-of-the box, promotes their creative confidence and connects academic learning with real world problems. While they work on design thinking projects, they may end up making several revisions of a solution for a single problem which will make them resilient and help them overcome the fear of failure.
